Definitions & Common Lingo
Below you will find a reference of the terms and acronyms you’ll come across while managing your pet’s care in the PadsPass mobile app.

Vaccinations

Vaccinations help prevent your pet from getting sick by training their immune system against diseases, are often required for travel. PadsPass makes it easy to keep them all organized in one place.

Bordetella Vaccine: helps protect dogs from kennel cough, a common and contagious cough in social settings like boarding, grooming, or dog parks.

DHPP Vaccine: a core combination vaccine that protects dogs from distemper, adenovirus, parainfluenza, and parvovirus. It’s given as a puppy series with regular boosters and is commonly required for daycare, boarding, and training.

Leptospirosis Vaccine: protects dogs against a serious bacterial disease spread through infected animal urine and contaminated water sources.

Rabies Vaccine: an altered or inactive form of the rabies virus that safely trains your pet's immune system to prevent rabies and protect public health. It is considered an essential vaccination for pets who travel internationally.

Parasite Treatments

Parasite treatments are a medication or care regimen used to prevent or eliminate parasites in pets, following specific dosing and instructions.

Acaricidal Treatment: flea and tick preventative required by some destinations like Bermuda and Puerto Rico before entry to prevent parasite spread.

Echinococcus Treatment: Also known as a tapeworm treatment. It is a deworming medication given to pets to kill tapeworms, prevent further infection, and may be required for travel.

Microchips

These small, permanent implants placed under a pet’s skin provide a unique ID to help identify them and are often required for travel.

Microchip Scan: A handheld reader detects your pet’s implanted microchip and displays its unique ID number, which a veterinary professional, animal warden, or inspector can use to confirm identity, access health records, and help reunite lost pets more quickly.

Veterinary Roles & Titles

This section will explain common veterinary titles to help pet owners understand roles and responsibilities of those caring for their pets.

BVSc: stands for Bachelor of Veterinary Science. This is a veterinary degree title used in many countries and is comparable to the DVM/VMD in North America.

DVM: stands for Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and is the standard degree awarded to veterinarians in North America upon completion of veterinary school.

MRCVS: Holders of this title are veterinarians that are members of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS), which is a mandatory qualification to practice as a veterinary surgeon in the UK.

VMD: stands for Veterinariae Medicinae Doctoris and is the equivalent of a DVM (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine), awarded exclusively to graduates of the University of Pennsylvania’s veterinary program. It’s common to see veterinarians with this credential in Pennsylvania or on televet platforms instead of DVM.
