DVM

A common veterinary degree you'll see on pet health and travel documents

DVM stands for Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. It’s a professional degree used by many licensed veterinarians in North America.

You may see DVM after a veterinarian’s name on documents like:

  • health certificates
  • vaccination records
  • travel paperwork

You might also see VMD instead of DVM. VMD (Veterinariae Medicinae Doctoris) is an equivalent veterinary degree used by some schools. In practice, DVM and VMD indicate the same type of veterinary degree—the difference is the wording, not the level of credential.
